Veterans

When you support the Veterans program, you help Precinct 2 provide counseling and assistance with veteran benefits. We serve approximately 3500 veterans and family members per year. The department is staffed by a fulltime team including two County Service Officers. They have assisted veterans, dependents and surviving family members with $8 million in VA claims. We provide transportation to the Houston VA Medical Center and the VA Regional Office from Baytown, Channelview, Crosby, Deer Park, Highlands, La Porte, and Pasadena.

Veterans may request assistance here.

Precinct 2 has been a driving force in expanding the veterans services throughout Harris County.

In 2019, we converted an entire community center to a dedicated Veterans Center. We provide meals, fellowship and resource referrals. Additionally, we are developing job retraining and certification programs, and will host a family resource fair.

We are building partnerships with other organizations to further expand our Veteran services and to amplify the efforts of community based groups. your story online can make all the difference.

Youth

By supporting Precinct2gether’s Youth, you are helping to close gaps in learning and enrichment experiences for the children of Precinct 2. We serve approximately 775 youth per year.

Our programs provide services for at-risk, minority, and low-income youth living in the underserved and unincorporated areas of East Harris County Precinct 2. Our Summer Day Camp provides approximately 375 elementary and middle school students from seven local school districts: Aldine, Channelview, Crosby, Galena Park, Goose Creek, Humble, and Houston ISDs.

Precinct2gether’s After School Program offers approximately 250 elementary and middle school students with homework help and enrichment opportunities that strengthen skills in reading, mathematics, language arts, and science.

Precinct2gether is the local affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which mails a free book a month to children from birth to age 5. Additionally, we provide free SAT Prep courses that are often too costly for the students who live in Precinct 2, as well as support many school supplies drives.

Seniors

By contributing to Senior programs,  you are supporting daily activities that promote physical, social, and mental health; transportation for doctor appointments, and free meals in community centers and delivered to homebound seniors. We serve 10,359 seniors per year.

On any given day, Precinct 2’s 10 community centers are bustling with activities and classes, and we serve 311 senior groups and 20 nursing homes outside our centers. Our Transportation Vouchers enable seniors and disabled individuals to ride for free to doctor appointments and activities of daily living such as grocery shopping, haircare and pharmacy pick-ups. Even for those who still drive, trips beyond their neighborhoods can be difficult for seniors. Harris County freeways, road construction, and traffic can cause anxiety. Bus trips organized by local senior groups offer access to stimulating activities with the safety a group provides.

We deliver 36,977 meals per year to homebound residents and provide 21,630 hot meals per year to seniors in our community centers.

Community

Precinct 2 has over 50 parks and 12 community centers with a vast array of multi-generational programming tailored to each community where these facilities are located. Outdoor Family Movie Nights have attracted over 200 attendees. Daily classes include everything from ESL to yoga. Planning is underway for an innovative, inclusive park that will enable children with disabilities to play alongside their siblings, friends, and parents.

We host annual events with Commissioner Adrian Garcia to celebrate Juneteenth, Hispanic Heritage Month, Veterans Day, and Christmas with the community.

Art

“Sundays” by Jesse Rodriguez aka Magnolia Grown

Precinct 2 has a rich history of artistic expression, from its outdoor murals to the studios where a diverse array of artists create works to be sold on the national market. Precinct 2 is home to some of the most significant Latino artists in Houston’s history. Precinct2gether strives to advance Commissioner Garcia’s vision to make art accessible to the underserved residents of Precinct 2 and to promote the work of the artists who call it home.

Precinct2gether is sponsoring the permanent installation of culturally significant murals in Houston’s East End. We are creating partnerships with local arts organizations to help ensure the art and artists of Precinct 2 are celebrated for enhancing the lives of residents and visitors.
